Building Independence

Connor is going to be 3 in April. He is quite helpful and insists on doing certain things by himself. I found an idea on Pinterest (If you don't already know, Pinterest is a site where you create "boards" and then "pin" neat ideas, photos, etc. This link goes to my Pinterest page.) where you give your kids their own cabinet or drawer for dishes and snacks. I had the perfect cabinet under my silverware drawer that was just holding unusued Tupperware. I cleaned out the cabinet and moved his things in...

The top shelf holds divided plates, juice box holder, lids and cups. The bottom shelf slides out and holds flat plates, bowls, silverware and a box for snacks. Today's snacks are a banana, yogurt raisins and Teddy Grahams. Since he's not quite 3 yet, I am going to put just the day's snacks in the box. Otherwise, that could be disasterous! I'd like to do another box for the fridge with the day's snacks like cheese sticks, fruit, juice box, yogurt, etc.

I started this yesterday and he did very well getting out his plate and fork for dinner. He spotted the raisins right away and had a mini-meltdown that he couldn't eat them right away, but it all worked out. He put them back when I said he had to eat dinner first. He ate dinner, then raisins. He obviously has more cups than that, but somehow almost every cup is dirty right now. Funny how that happens!
